WE'RE MOVING!

On September 1 Fundamental Fitness is moving to the Frederick Indoor Sports Center (FISC), formerly the Sportsplex.

Located adjacent to Rt. 15 and 26 on the North side of the City of Frederick, this 65,000 SF Indoor Recreation Facility houses two full sized turf fields (30 yds x 60 yds), Health Express Café and Sports Lounge with generous views of the fields, a sports retail shop and a soon, yours truly Fundamental Fitness.

We are excited about our new space and all the amenities FISC offers.  We'll continue to offer all of our outstanding services at FISC and are hopeful we can add more with the addition of the full turf fields at the Sports Center.

Jay Jeffert, General Manager for FISC, "We are glad to offer a variety of services at FISC and Fundamental Fitness is a perfect fit for our facility and our customers.  We look forward to working with Eva and her trainers when they join us in September."

Built in 1999, the building is in the process of receiving many upgrades and updates such as a new field turf field, new state of art lighting, a new health express café/sports lounge featuring free high speed internet access, flat screen TV's and field cameras to enjoy the live action from the comfort of the café's lounge.  The facility will primarily focus on turf related sports such as soccer, lacrosse, flag football but will also be expanding to include other sports such as dodge ball, field hockey and kickball.

The FISC's mission to provide a well organized, safe and welcoming environment to allow children and adults of all ages to enjoy one of life's greatest pastimes, sports fits well with Fundamental Fitness's goal to help our clients "Get Fit For Life."

Fundamental Fitness Welcomes New Trainer

Please join me in welcoming our newest trainer to Fundamental Fitness, Steve Roy.

Steve has been involved with and had a passion for athletics since childhood and has been working in the fitness industry since 1997. He first began personal training for Fitness First Health Clubs and decided that helping individuals achieve their personal goals with regards to their health and well being was what he wanted to spend his life pursuing.

After spending several years in Colorado running a youth fitness program, teaching core strengthening classes, and training folks with sports injuries, Steve moved back to Maryland.

In Maryland, Steve received his personal trainer certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and began an in-home training business. Steve currently works with folks varying in ages from 25 to 60 and who have goals ranging from shoulder and knee rehabilitation, fat loss, gaining lean muscle mass, as well as folks looking to make a complete change in their lifestyle.

Steve says "My greatest satisfaction is helping people reach their goals and seeing the life changing results that come from their hard work and discipline."

If you see him at the studio say Hi and if you are interested in working with him please contact Eva.

FEAR THE HAPPY PEOPLE

By Lori Rypka - a member of my TEAM GREEN, NBC 25 Fitness Wellness Challenge and reprinted from the Frederick News Post

One thing I have gleaned in my journey toward better health and healthy habits is that fit people are generally more positive people. Why, you ask? I am pretty sure it is because they have so much energy that I worry the state will come in and regulate it somehow.

I challenge you to find a personal trainer sitting in front of a cheesy pizza looking bored while doing bicep curls with 2-pound weights. That scenario just doesn't exist -at least with the folks I've met. This is why they are so inspiring to other people (read: other people like me who previously would have put down that 2-pound weight and did 1/8th of a 16-inch pie lifts as exercise).

So the team who has been whipping me into shape has expanded. I hope this doesn't mean that I 'need' this many people. I've just been fortunate to be presented with opportunities to learn from different people.

You've met Steve, who I credit with helping me start the fire of motivation toward getting healthy. And then there was Maya, my avatar friend who sasses back at me if I don't plug her in and work out often enough. Even avatars can be intimidating.

Let me introduce you to some new folks.  First, there's Eva. When you look at her resume, you can't help but to be impressed by the fact that she runs - and wins - ultra marathons. I get tired at the idea of driving 26 miles, let alone running 100.

She has introduced me to the evil, evil moves called mountain climbers and burpies. I put these right up there with the step-ups that Steve had me doing. I'm not the most coordinated person in the world, you know.

For that very reason, I tend not to go to workout classes. Remember last year I told you about a seemingly sweet girl who greeted me at my first kickboxing class? The music started and she transformed into a fighting machine. I couldn't come close to hanging with her, so I left the class.

Then there was Melissa. All I know about Melissa is that she is one perpetually lit firecracker. Not even in my 2-year-old boy have I ever seen so much energy in one person in my life. I went to a couple of workouts with her. Very inspiring.

I swallowed my negative self-image and decided to try classes again. I found a class called Body Combat. Sounds fairly innocent, right? Mixed martial arts to pumping music. Right up my alley, I thought. No dancing, just punching. I can punch.

So many instructors to choose from... who should I embarrass myself in front of first... Marci. Sounds like a nice girl. Bet she'll take it easy on me.

I showed up at the class, and Marci recognized me as a newbie, or someone she has not stolen the lungs from previously. She smiled, welcomes me to the class, and we chit-chatted. OK, this won't be so bad.

We entered the room and she put on a camo bandanna. Uh oh. I'm in trouble now, I thought. The music started, and I quickly became convinced she was a warrior. That was not the person I just spoke with outside the door.

I did my best to keep up. I was punching, I was kicking, I was karate-chopping with alacrity. I was wheezing, I was panting, I was dreaming about laying down on my bed that night.

I'm not one who sweats much - never have been. About 10 minutes into this class, I was convinced the sprinkler system turned on. Why am I all wet? I had sweat pouring out of my hair. Pouring, I tell you.

"Only 30 more seconds of the most intense ab pain you can imagine! You can do it!!" Marci yelled. I stayed in position, but only because I was so focused on whether or not I even had ab muscles in there to start with. The next day, it was clear where they were. It was like someone woke up a sleeping bear before hibernation season was over. Ouch.

And this is the stuff that helps people get fit, and that turns fit people more positive? Yep.

I've progressed to 25 percent of my weight loss goal. I'm no longer taking baby step toward that goal, I've moved up to walking lunges. Once I hit my goal, I'll be raffling off two tickets to the "gun show."

Move of the Month

Dumbbell Front Squat

.

Starting Position
Stand with your feet slighter wider than hip-width, facing outward or turned slightly outwards while holding a dumbbell in each hand by your sides, with palms facing inwards.

Step 2
Curl the dumbbells to a starting position where they rest on the front edge of your shoulders or just in front of your shoulders.

Downward Phase
Shift your hips backwards then downwards to create a hinge-like movement at your knees. As you lower your hips the knees will then start to shift forward slowly, but try to control the amount of forward movement. Attempt to keep your back flat.

Step 4
Continue to lower yourself until your thighs are parallel or almost parallel with the floor, or until your heels begin to lift off the floor, or until your torso begins to round or flex forward. Monitor your feet, ankles and knees, ensuring that the feet don't move, the ankles do not collapse in or out and the knees remain aligned over the second toe.

Lowered Position From the front, the knees should continue to remain aligned over the second toe and body weight should be evenly distributed over both feet.

Upward Phase
While maintaining your back, chest and head-up position, exhale and extend the hips and knees by pushing your feet into the floor through your heels. The hips and torso need to rise together while keeping the heels flat on the floor and knees aligned over the second toe. Continue extending until you reach your starting position.
